Recaps are fucking hard to do. There's way too much stuff happening in a year to sum it up in a couple of tracks, videos or else. So this is not a definitive 2012 list. It's stuff that I liked in the past year, that you might like and if you actually like them, you don't even need to pay for them... legally. Just show some support anyway which way you can. And I'm not talking about that one track that artist could not fit on his record, I'm talking about EPs and stuff. Click on the big titles to access the download page. Here we go.
Starting off smooth and sounding like a classic 60s movie intro, Co.fee's excellent Bermuda EP turns out to be a well balanced masterpiece. Between exotic chants and drum-full beats, there's a chance you might distinguish in its soundwaves the melody of summer. Nothing less.
A Tribe Called Red is a very interesting trio of Djs promoting Aboriginal music aka their roots. The music they make is a unique mix of dubstep/electro and traditional native american chants aka pow-wow. Listening is believing so here's the 6 first tracks of their free eponymous LP!
Seattle based rapper Aaron Cohen came out of nowhere with his dope mixtape "Murk". He recently confirmed my appreciation of his ginger bearded talent with his collaboration with ABGOHARD and Spaceman. Check it out!
Shortly before the release of the excellent "Other's People Problem", art collective Breton gave this 5 tracks EP as a gift to their Facebook fan. A nice appatizer from the electro/indie/experimental/hardtodescribe London band whom we had the chance to interview earlier this year.
The rapidly growing numbers of music RAW Records puts out for free is pretty impressive. Since their debut, they've put out music from Dear Lola, Paveun, Hesk, Vilify, Watapachi, DJ Fuckyobitch, Kid Bassline.... And the variety of style is also a likeable element. From the bass remix of a Jacqueline Tieb classic by Thømas White to the ecclectic "Foolproof Killer" by Koloah, there's a great middle section to choose your sounds from. Check out RAW Records free sets!
There's not enough buzz surrending releases by Montreal's own FOXTROTT. Lively synth, strong voice, a sweet pop feeling, this three tracks EP is fucking candy. A small candy which you decide the price of...
Legendary, no... mythical filmmaker and producer Quentin Dupieux aka Mr.Oizo released this EP earlier this year. If you know him, there's a chance you also know that his tracks might give you brain damage but it's the kind of things that grows on you... like a tumor. Except for "WC" : that's just a straight ballin' track to drive to. Also, have fun on his lazy website!
Action Bronson - Blue Chips (w/Party Supplies)
It's been a big year for Action Bronson (insert weight related pun here). He kicked off the summer with a great collaboration with Queen's "Party Supplies" and later doubled the fun with a new mixtape this time produced by "The Alchemist". Talking about fun, his videos are usually hilarious just like the one for "Steve Wynn". Spoiler alert : bath salts.
Gramatik - #digitalfreedom
In an effort to raise awareness to the possible effects of bills like SOPA (remember about that?), Gramatik released this great hard hitting EP which is a rough way from his usual chillz hip-hop soundz. It goes to show how versatile that dude is.
